New Trauma Centre and Oncological Hospital

International invitational competition, 1st prize and subsequent design commission

The site for the new hospitals is in the heart of Meilahti, the main campus of Helsinki University Central Hospital. An important starting point was the detailed juridical urban plan prepared by the Helsinki City planning office. This plan, based on a master plan prepared by Harris-Kjisik, had to be adhered to in the competition entries. The participating teams included well-known hospital design offices from Spain, France, Holland and Canada. The realization design started very soon after the competition and the aim has been to have the building finished during 2020.

”The ensemble provides a comfortable neighbour for the existing buildings and the scale is, in spite of the large size of the builidng, reasonable… The architecture is controlled, the volumes are compact and the basic structure is flexible”
